The GHK sequence occurs naturally as a fragment released when type I collagen is degraded, and the literature describes it as a matrikine - a matrix-derived signaling fragment [3].
The palmitoyl tail is a delivery-driven modification. It raises lipophilicity so the molecule partitions into stratum corneum lipid lamellae in penetration studies, a property the unmodified GHK tripeptide lacks [4].
In published work it is most often encountered as one component of multi-peptide cosmetic formulations, notably alongside palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. That co-formulation is a real limitation of the evidence base, because it complicates attribution of any observed effect to the tripeptide alone [2].
